LAND(E)SCAPES: CENTER OF PSYCOTHEURAPEUTIC METHODS AT GOUVERNETOS MONASTERY, CRETE
TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF CRETE
This study is an approach to the meaning of ascenticism and relocation of a
"modern" hermit. The starting point was the today' s circumstance-reality in which a person finds h imse If trapped in the environment he created. An environment that is characterized by complexity and intense rhythms. The "modern hermit" appears as the person who has the need of isolation and escape of every-day life. The aim of this study is an effort of creating psychotherapeutic environments which are used by a non-clinically ill population, which will emotionally activate the person, enhancing the visitor's experience. A new kinesthetic experience is proposed through the contact ma inly with the natu ra I environment and then with the environment that is created.
The project is placed at the Monastery of Gouvernetos in the Avlaki Gorge, in Chania. Th is is an interesting topography -geographically, geopshysica lly, historicallywith distinctive geomorphologica I qualities, with variety of light' s qualities and optical escapes. Considering the dominance of the landscape, new uses are given to existing buildings and a new route is created as a continuation of the existing and aims to enhance the visitor's interaction with the environment. Alternations in spatial qualities, successive visua I relations with the gorge a re the features of th is route which constitutes a narration for the visitor. The route welcomes the new functions and spatial structures by placing them apart from the existing ones.
