Improvements to heritage features in Can Solei i de Ca l'Arnús Park
The project involves the improvement of three characteristic heritage features in Can Solei i de Ca l’Arnús Park in the municipality of Badalona: the old irrigation channel and the surrounding area, the romantic garden and the caves.
Within the project, their restoration is based on a technical perspective, involving solutions based on sustainability and accessibility, in order to create new added values that make them more interesting.
With this idea in mind, the project is set out based on the following three concepts:
- The sound of water
The water supply for the old agricultural estate came from a mine, and a system of ponds, channels and sluice gates irrigated the crops. The project restores the most important of these channels, which runs along the line of cypress trees, so that the musical tones of running water return to the park and accompany visitors as they walk through it.
The water channel and some sluice gates have been refurbished by rebuilding the mortar half-pipe and replacing the most severely damaged ceramic features, and a water recirculation system has been designed.
The project also restores two ornamental fountains located nearby; paves various parts of in the surrounding area with ceramic bricks; includes the construction of ceramic benches to create new rest areas; and sets out new paths and flowerbeds with vegetation and trees.
- Protecting the romantic garden
Any consideration of a historical park must take into account its main heritage asset – its vegetation. It must be protected if it is to grow, thus the project creates a new low railing as a boundary around the perimeter of the various flowerbeds. This is combined with the planting of new trees, shrubs and carpeting plants.
- Safer pathways for all
Walking in the parks is one of the primary activities for visitors, but it is not always easy for everyone. The existing granitic sand paths with their steep slopes have been paved, ensuring improved accessibility and links to various parts of the park.
This project is part of the operation for "Restoration and improvement of the metropolitan parks network with heritage value", with ERDF co-funding, within the priority of conserving and protecting the environment and enhancing the efficiency of resources by restoring and preserving the cultural heritage of metropolitan parks.
