LANDSCAPE REGENERATION PROJECT . POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA CAMPUS.

Landscape Urbanism Workshop I

Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain

This campus landscape regeneration project consists of an integral redesign of existing green space. The project area is located on the Campus of the Polytechnic University of Valencia. As with much of the campus green space, it was originally designed as a traditional ornamental landscape garden, composed by vast greens sprinkled with organic groupings of trees. It is in a prime location next to the main entrance of the University, however with the passing of time it has become less appealing to campus users and consequently devoid of activity. The proposal introduces an aesthetic and functional renovation with water sensitive strategies. Mediterranean plants and varied tree cover break the uniformity of the existing green while various scales of open space establish different activity spaces and leisure options. Water features along with elements that provide shade and furniture are weaved into the space as well. The design is comprised of three main axes that allow for the interrelation between various public spaces on the campus while the secondary axes establish functional paths. The conceptual reference for the overall composition is Piet Mondrian's "cosmic grid", which is a geometric abstraction that seeks to find the structure of the universe.
