Altomünster: Acupunctures in rural communities as a contribution to resilient structures

1 Existing Potentials

1_1 High qualities with regard to landscape structures, historical built structures and building culture
1_2 Attractive location of a small lively rural town in the neighbourhood of Munich

2 Problems and Challenges

2_1 Predominant individual car traffic: Many commuters travel to Munich by car, even though there is an S-Bahn system. The existing train station is not attractive and connections within the community do not work.
2_2 Precious but completely unused built structures in the form of an old monastery, which is currently completely unused, although it is located in the middle of the small market town.
2_3 Unrestrained consumption of fertile soil for new settlement structures and outdated ways of thinking in the case of new settlement developments, with too low density and without energy-saving construction technologies.
2_4 Loss of the rural character and increase of ubiquitous, arbitrary settlement / building structures.

3 Planning and Design Approach

3_1 The 'Acupuncture Approach' is based on the idea of taking measures at neuralgic spots in order to strengthen the entire structure.
3_2 Reuse of old built structures as a contribution for resilient structures and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions
3_3 Creating spaces of dialogue in which people use existing characteristic spatial structures in order to realise a lively coexistence:
3_3_1 Social-cultural (monastery): A sequence of different spaces revitalizes the site for different for different user requirements: public spaces with cafés, exhibition rooms etc., private spaces with studios, meeting rooms etc. and semi-private spaces
3_3_2 Rural (former farmstead): A place for affordable housing and a market for regional products
3_3_3 Sub-urban mobility (train station): Transit space as an innovative mobility hub, but also as an important entrance to the city
