Il nuovo centro piacentiniano di Bergamo

The Flânerie project, winner of a European competition announced in 2017 by the municipality, concerns the connective open spaces (streets, squares, gardens) of Bergamo's Piacentiniano Center: the historic city was taken as a priority value for its landscape, environmental and social role in the overall urban territory.

The founding values of the project are:
- The general urban layout and the physical and perceptual relationships between the parts of the historic built-up area;
- The established symbolic role in the perception of this part of the city;
- The materials that characterize the public space: stone paving, lighting, trees;
- The vocation to accommodate transient uses (fairs, demonstrations, markets, events, shows...) and daily flânerie;
- The theater as a key to interpret (physical and symbolic) the center of Bergamo and its landscape.

Criteria that inspired the project: RESPECT, DELICACY, MATCHING, CLEANING, REORGANIZATION OF FLOWS.

Overall, work has been done to strengthen the identity of the existing by placing itself at its service and not in antagonism, and to decisively improve environmental quality by increasing green areas, de-impermeabilizing asphalt surfaces, eliminating surface parking lots, and substantially pedestrianizing the entire area.

Steps were taken to:
- REMOVE, UNIFY, CLEAN, EMPHASIZE.
- ENHANCE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PARTS AND EXISTING EMERGENCIES.
- INCREASE ENJOYABILITY AND POSSIBILITIES OF USE.
- IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY : GREEN WAS TAKEN AS A STRATEGIC ELEMENT IN THE DEFINITION OF URBAN SPACE.
- ELIMINATE THE OVERLAP OF INCOMPATIBLE FLOWS : PEDESTRIANIZE AND RECOVER TO DIFFERENT USES THE PRE-EXISTING AREAS OF SURFACE PARKING LOTS.
RESULTS ALREADY 'VERIFIABLE DEMONSTRATE THE NEW LIVABILITY OF THE CENTER AND THE REVIVAL OF THE FLANERIE BY CITIZENS WHO FLOCK IN LARGE NUMBERS.
