From a Concrete Bulkhead Riverbank to a Vibrant Shoreline Park--Suining South Riverfront Park
In the burgeoning Suining City in China, infrastructural preparation for urban growth along the Fujian River. The concrete bulkheads had been a hindrance and degraded local ecology, conditions which this new riverfront park accomplishes to correct by converting the bleak existing levee into a verdant platform that fosters engagement with the river edge through terraced connections to the city beyond. Native species & wildlife restoration, stormwater cleansing system augment the quality of spaces.
This 130 Ha resilient green shore infrastructure initiatives project, transforms a 4km long barren shoreline into verdant, sustainable riverfront park by 5 multi-strategies:
Resilience: Critical revise of original engineered site by using resilience method to restore riverside ecosystem also addressing the flood vulnerability.
Ecological Engineering: The eyesore concrete bulkhead structure is adapted to an ecological riparian system. Stylized terraces of landscape, traverse on the sides form the stormwater management infrastructure.
Phytoremediation: A wetland system cleans treated run-off before it flows into the river.
Stormwater Management: The existing bulkhead that 2 meters above street level is enriched with a terraced green landscape, filters the run-off collected, then flows into storm water retention & detention system.
Urban Weaving: Network of walkways, wetland experience, fitness tracks, riparian spaces, elevated platforms & canopy walkways, wildlife corridors weaving into the urban system and unify people.
Cultural Factor: The bold signature garden terrace patterned cloud forms & subtle motif inspired by Guanyin Buddha with "Floating Reflection Pond” pulsates classical legends & poems.
Conclusion
The project incorporates environments conducive to biodiversity. The positive transformation of the landscape in design aspects allows a daily and in-depth approach to nature, which is an exemplary model to civic- ecology integration.
