La Rambleta Promenade
Objective
The aim of the intervention on La Rambleta Promenade in Sant Adrià de Besòs is to restore a deteriorated urban space and turn it into a new civic, natural and accessible avenue. The objective is to enhance connectivity between the urban fabric and the Besòs River Park, improving the public space’s environmental quality, accessibility and social use for all the residents.
Description
The project has completely transformed an area 420 metres long, between Gran Via Avenue and Miquel Servet Street. The pavement has been widened to 7.60 metres, and the stretch of 47 metres separating the promenade’s frontage from the river has been redrawn. The new design prioritises pedestrian walkways and includes a separate cycle lane, shaded seating areas with street furniture, a recreation area for dogs, and a car park with charging points for electric vehicles. La Rambleta Promenade is connected to several perpendicular streets, creating pedestrianised crossroads that act as new urban squares. The vegetation has been increased by 85%, with new lawns, shrubs and trees providing shade and fostering the presence and conservation of urban wildlife. The project includes a paving system with open joints permitting rainwater to seep through, thereby contributing to the regeneration of groundwater. Prior decontamination of the soil ensures the quality of the water that is collected. This commitment to sustainability also reduces the impact of climate change on the urban environment.
Evaluation
The new La Rambleta Promenade constitutes a substantial improvement of the public space, with high levels of environmental and functional quality. It has become a green and a social corridor – a place for walking and sitting – and a key factor in the ecological connectivity between the city and the river. Its contribution to biodiversity and urban sustainability make it a shining example of metropolitan transformation. The residents can enjoy it as a new space for shared public life, relationships and collective well-being.
