Laboratorio di Arte dei Giardini e Architettura del Paesaggio / LAND LAB PA

Universita' degli Studi di Palermo

The project site includes the southern portion of the historic center of Palermo, close to the sea,
where the Kalsa district extended during the Islamic domination. After the Arab domination, the
district preserved its main role in the city thanks to its artistic and architectural heritage made up of
monuments in Arab-Norman, Renaissance and Baroque style. The plan also involves the Foro
Italico, Kalsa square, Via dello Spasimo and Magione square, with the route between the
Renaissance walls and Palazzo De Seta. The district is indeed one of the most interesting place
but Its elements are disconnected each other because it was bombed during the Second World
War. The project aims to link these discontinuities, relics, urban voids and dilapidated buildings,
with a design of land, urban furniture and vegetation that makes these innumerable fragments a
unitary network. It also aims at the active participation of neighborhood residents in improving the
quality of life through vertical gardens and other devices.
The main elements of the whole system are red , which takes the form of ground, to mark a path,
or different systems of urban furniture to frame particular views and enhance the hidden entrances
of the monuments. In addition, it was decided to restore centrality to the Kalsa square by making it
a pedestrian zone with a system of steps and seats.
