Coast to Park

Coast to Park

Laboratorio di Arte dei Giardini e Architettura del Paesaggio / LAND LAB PA

Universita' degli Studi di Palermo

The project area is located on the south coast of Palermo, covers an area of 150,000 mq. The road axis of
Via Messina Marina divides the area in two parts: one on the coast, the other towards the countryside with
citrus grove. The project makes a joint of the parts proceeding first with the burial of the road, although its
layout is visible in the design of the ground. The new urban park is divided into longitudinal strips crossed
by two transversal strips. Each section has a function: the main longitudinal urban gardens, gardens with
tanks, circular playgrounds (recalling the silos around the area), the school and the existing citrus grove; on
the coast the belvedere and the fitness area. A hierarchy of avenues designed in continuity with the coast
allows to cross the bands. The main avenues extend to the sea where they become moles for bathing and
connect to the beach via stairs, recalling the historical memory of the shores arranged on platforms and
cancelled from the improper political and urban events of the 20th century of the city. Narrow avenues
serve as a link between the different areas of the park.
Construction works include the recovery of the brick factory on the coast, transformed into an industrial
museum and exhibition space, in order to provide the area and the entire south coast with a new attractive
pole.
