Innovative mobility and inclusive spaces in Munich: New cycle route along the Isar river as an important element of a multi-layered public urban space

1 Target

The new mobility concept of the city of Munich will implement new cycle path systems throughout the whole city. Car traffic and motorised mobility in general will be significantly reduced in favour of safe and attractive cycling routes. Another important goal is to create multifunctional public spaces and meeting places for all social milieus.

2 Project Site

The inner-city west bank of the Isar river between 'Deutsches Museum' and 'Friedensengel', which comprises relevant parts of the historically important 'Royal Munich'.

3 Problems and Challenges

3_1 Currently, a busy multi-lane road leads along the Isar, accompanied by two rows of parking vehicles.
This situation massively disrupts the connection between the adjacent urban quarter and the riverbank.
3_2 The safety of cyclists is at great risk in the current situation.
3_3 Urban climate conditions urgently need to be improved.
4 Planning and Design Approach
4_1 Social aspects: The idea is to create a communicative and inclusive atmosphere according to the motto 'Plurality takes place'. 4_2 The principle “Stage and Tribune”means the users can take up a role either as an 'actor' or as a member of the audience.
4_3 Genius loci: Beneath of the general public, one of the “performers” is the Isar river, with its very different subtile characteristics. 4_4 A video film shows different ways of perceiving space: taking the bus, cycling, walking. The video also conveys knowledge about the quite differentiated atmospheres and special features of the Isar.
4_5 A two-directional bicycle lane, a small residential street and an attractive promenade replace the existing traffic and create a new urban space with high quality.
