The Garden Theatre
Landscape Architecture Studio II
University of Calgary
Located in northern Ramsay near the Canadian Pacific Railway and the future Light Rail Transit (LRT) Green Line in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the project aims to achieve the goals defined in the previous teamwork master planning and urban design stage: enhancing the visual quality (especially along the existing and planned major transport infrastructures), the cultural and natural identity, and the connectivity between Ramsay and the nearby communities. The site is part of a series of residual public green spaces that we proposed to regenerate creating a connected system of gardens and parks, which will provide the community with a variety of benefits.
The Garden Theatre is designed to serve multiple purposes, including food production, social engagement, and aesthetics for the community. During the summer, the Garden Theatre is primarily used for growing vegetables and crops, with a few ornamental gardens included. Across the seasons, it can be also enjoyed as a park and a place for events. Reshaping the slope morphology of the site, and seizing the potential of the scenery, the Garden Theatre embraces a performance space suitable for activities such as movie screenings, social gatherings, and events like night markets. The vision behind this design is to create a socially active production space by combining a terrace garden with an amphitheater, allowing for various enriching activities to take place simultaneously.
