Reconstruction of square in Vilnius: Music library

Reconstruction of square in Vilnius: Music library

Landscape architecture

Vilnius Tech

The project involves reconstruction of an abandoned centrals square, surrounded by monumental city buildings – Vilnius Congress Palace, Government of Lithuania building and the National Opera House. Survey results showed that residents were not aware of such square. This space also was also inaccessible to people with limited mobility. Following the historic heritage reconstruction needed to correspond to the architecture and its stylistics. Two concepts were prepared – architectural and content concept with the aim to be open for all people. Since the square is exclusively surrounded by musical objects, a common theme – music and water – was chosen. The project MUSIC LIBRARY aims to introduce the music „reading room“ accessible to all. New mobile application would allow choosing and listening to classical music in the shade of the trees, presenting the exhibited local plants to the visitors, telling a story to the younger ones. For low sighted and/or blind people an interactive story could be created to help them navigate within the square, introduce them to architecture and plants. For architectural concept I used the lines of the buildings and designed a cascade for collecting the surface water. The square merged into the general rhythm of the buildings, becoming inseparable part and forming the needed slopes of paths for all to easy access. With this project the square will be opened to all, providing people with opportunity to listen music, hear the quietly falling water from the cascade, get to know the plants and the history of this part of the city.
