Proyecto de recuperación de la Villa del Colle del Cardinale

Restauracio i revaloritzacio de la Villa del Colle del Cardinale

Redevelopment of Villa del Colle del Cardinale

Villa del Colle del Cardinale is a significant site for understanding the evolution of the landscape, agricultural traditions, and historical gardens.
The project blends essential interventions that respect the site's identity with minimal restorations aimed at improving accessibility and enabling educational and public use, all guided by sustainability and low-maintenance principles.

The design retraces the historical layers of the garden layouts developed over time.
In the late 16th century, the villa was built overlooking the valley from broad terraces, typical of its time. In the 17th century, the park was transformed in line with changing trends: first with French-style parterres, then English-style landscapes.

In 1893, the villa was sold to Ferdinando Cesaroni, who redesigned the garden once more according to contemporary taste.

The restored garden now highlights mineral and plant elements from various periods, allowing visitors to “read” the compositional logic of each era.

Accessibility has been enhanced with permeable paving, making the park more inclusive and improving the visibility and usability of fountains and themed gardens.

The geometric flower beds, documented in the 18th–19th century Gregorian Cadastre, have been replanted with spring and summer bulbs for seasonal interest.

The project also includes demonstration vegetable plots, a small orchard, and the restoration of the potting greenhouse for educational use.

Landscapes hold memories and meanings that shape our bond with place. Landscape architecture becomes a practice of translation—revealing the silent intelligences embedded in the nature.
