Alibaba Xixi Campus
The Alibaba Xixi Campus, reimagines how landscape design can create thriving ecosystems within complex built environments. Spanning 26 hectares, at the heart of the campus is the BioHabiNet concept—a living framework that weaves biodiversity, habitat diversity, and ecological connectivity into a seamless, regenerative landscape.
The campus landscape functions as an interconnected network of habitats, including native planting zones, bio-swales, and a central lake that holds and recycles water supporting wildlife. Hard to perceive, this is effectively a green roof ecosystem crowning a multi-level podium, transforming what would traditionally be hard surfaces into vibrant habitats that foster biodiversity.
Pathways and circulation mimic natural systems—flowing like a web of mycelium—to offer intuitive, immersive journeys through the landscape to social and community places immersed in nature. Encouraging exploration, discovery, and moments of respite, fostering a strong connection between people and nature.
Serving a vibrant community of 30,000, the campus offers diverse outdoor spaces—community events space, a central pavilion, sports, health and fitness facilities, intimate social pockets, outdoor meeting areas, hanging gardens and an urban farm—that nurture wellbeing, social interaction, and community cohesion.
A haven for native flora and fauna, including pollinators, birds, and amphibians, the landscape demonstrates success in supporting ecological balance, connecting to the broader Hangzhou Xixi ecosystem, the campus exemplifies resilience and regeneration.
This landmark project stands as a visionary blueprint for future cities where nature and people thrive together.
