ARCTIC AGRIHOOD - COMBINING OPEN SPACE AND AGRICULTURE WITH URBANITY FOR SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND FOOD DIVERSITY IN ICELAND

Master Thesis

Leibniz University Hannover

This master thesis presents the results of the issue, which synergies are implied by an
improved agricultural production, especially with respect to the open space utilization.

The examination of the geographic conditions of Iceland at the periphery of the Arctic Circle are focused on within the program. Its extreme weather conditions and atmospheric phenomena present strategic obstacles for the built environment and agriculture.

Like I experienced during my stay in Iceland for this thesis, the farmers of this volcanic island have to cope with rough climate combined with a very sparse vegetation.
This work includes approaches how to manage an independent nutrition of Iceland’s population based on vegetables, especially grown in greenhouses.

It defines locations in the Reykjavík metropolitan region varying in the levels of agricultural densification. Besides, this paper presents a specific proposal for combining agriculture with open space in urban spheres like the growing capital of Reykjavík, and it addresses topics like didactics, recreation and ecological awareness.
