Barcelona International Landscape Biennial is a bi-annual umbrella complex project, integrating both Professional and School prizes, topic-based Symposium, Catalogues and Exhibitions as a creative medium where practitioners, academics and students interested in Landscape Architecture would network, learn and debate.

From European to International. BARCELONA INTERNATIONAL LANDSCAPE BIENNIAL.

After being recognized as an exceptional professional meeting point at the European level after the first seven editions: "Remaking Landscapes” (1999), “Gardens in Arms” (2001), “Only with Nature” (2003), “Landscape: as product or production"  (2006), "Storm and Stress" (2008), “Liquid landscape” (2010) and "Biennal versus Biennal" (2012); the Biennal embraced its internationalisation as a turning point, which brought us closer to new landscape realities in the world. The following editions, “A Landscape for you” (2014), "Tomorrow Landscapes" (2016) and "Performative Natures" (2018) and "Climate Change Again (2021)" confirmed its position as an excellent diffusion tool to champion the relevance of landscape architecture project and interventions.

Symposium

Each edition has its Symposium articulated under a motto. All kinds of theoretical and practical reflections enhance an interprofessional debate. The Symposium takes place for two days, and round tables, debates, presentations by the finalists of Rosa Barba Proze, the finalists of the School's Prize, and a keynote by the invited lecturers. The Symposium is held in Barcelona (Spain) at Palau de la Música. Still, it is also broadcasted live in the Col·legi Arquitectos de Catalunya (COAC) event hall and ETSAB-Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Rosa Barba Casanovas International Landscape Architecture Prize

The Rosa Barba Casanovas International Landscape Architecture Prize joins the Barcelona International Landscape Biennial framework. The call for the presentation of landscape projects and landscape planning was approved and created worldwide over a period of 5 years (before each Prize is open to submission). A single prize, an economic grant of 15,000 euros, was delivered during the Symposium. The winner and the finalists present their projects during the conferences. The projects selected for the International Jury will be published in the catalogue of the 11th Biennial and also uploaded on a digital creation website of the Biennials (Paisateca). Convened with the collaboration of the Banc de Sabadell Foundation.

International Landscape Architecture School Prize

The International Landscape Architecture School Prize is part of the Barcelona International Landscape Biennial. Each school can present a maximum of the five best projects of their institution. Students can present projects made over a period of 5 years (before each Prize is open to submission). The prize, an economic grant of 1500 euros, was delivered during the Symposium. The winner and the finalists presented their projects during the symposium and the exhibition at the ETSAB-Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. The projects selected for the International Jury will be published in the Biennial catalogue and included in the website catalogue (Paisateca).

Exhibitions and Publications

The professional and academic reflection of the awards mentioned above will materialize in two thematic exhibitions and in a publication in the form of a catalogue that will be the enduring witness of that edition: The Rosa Barba Prize, located at COAC, and school projects Prize, located at ETSAB. The aim is to disseminate and promote professional and academic practices. The exhibitions are itinerant through several universities and cultural centres around the world. The projects displayed at the exhibitions and the texts of the best keynotes during the symposium are published in each edition's Catalogue and Pre catalogue as written memory of the knowledge creation of the event.
