Joachim Swillus was born in Bad Dürkheim, Germany, in 1972. From 1993 to 2001 he studied architecture at the University of Kaiserslautern, the Technological University of Vienna in Austria and the University of Arts in Berlin. Joachim Swillus worked as an architect at the offices of Zvi Hecker and Architekten Alten in Berlin and Jumeau and Paillard in Paris. In 2003, he founded the architectural office, Swillus Architekten. From 2005 to 2010 he was a partner in the A24 Landschaft (A24_landschaft, Robel Swillus und partner), along with landscape architect Robel Steffan. Since 2011 the Swillus Architekten architecture office continues.
