TheprojectLAND UNTER suggests a solution for the challenges imposed byclimate changei n futures treets. This also involves atraffic-calmed reinterpretation of the street and its transformation into a true public space with recreation alqualities. The design gives greater importance to rainwater in the Praterstraße,inthe2nd district of Vienna with a reference to the nearby Danube river. In addition tof unctional considerations, water becomes temporarily available, visible and thus perceptible. The project area is located intheformerinundationareaoftheDanubefloodplains.Bothfunctionand form ofthisformerlandscapeweretranslated intothestreetdesign:Theroad isslightlycurved slowing down traffic; so-called lines of movement, referring to river arms, run through pavements and squares as a connecting and structuring element; the planted mounds reference gravel banks, and the new trees pickup the natural vegetation and improve the microclimate. The implementation planning was focussing on the rainwater treatment. Plant beds along the road collect rainwater from pavement area sand the road by rigole infiltrations. They can hold excess water in case of heavy rain falls in combination with a first-flush channel system. On the squaress light depressions collect rainwater, keep it visible for sometime, and drain the entire area via their subtile rigoles.
