Dongguan Central Park

Dongguan Central Park serves as a model for ecological sustainability & urban integration within the heart of Dongguan's Central Business District. Located along Xinji River, the park incorporates a water-sensitive design that blends urban functionality with environmental preservation. Guided by the "P-L-A-C-E" principles: People-oriented, Legible, Active, Cleansed & Ecological, the park transforms Dongguan from an industrial past into a thriving hub for life, work and recreation. The borderless design fosters seamless transitions between indoor & outdoor spaces.

Previously plagued by disorderly development & infrastructure issues, Dongguan has embraced China's Sponge-City approach, integrating blue-green systems to manage terrain variations, enhance connectivity, and regulate stormwater through dual-stream water systems. Seasonal hydrological functions ensure effective water storage & circulation; during dry seasons, Xinji River channels water through filtration systems, while wet seasons enable overflow management via the central lake. These innovative techniques increase surface permeability by 16.5%, enhance flood resilience & create ecological wetland corridors that benefit terrestrial & aquatic species.

The park's bioengineered flood management zones double as public spaces, offering stormwater detention capacities for extreme weather events. Conservation efforts safeguard significant native plants, reinforcing biodiversity & cultural heritage. Birdwatchers have identified over 20 species thriving in the regenerated landscape. Meanwhile, a strategic planting scheme ensures year-round seasonal vibrancy, complemented by undulating terrain that enhances sightlines & circulation paths, immersing visitors in picturesque views.

Dongguan Central Park redefines the infrastructure needed for flood mitigation and embraces a new mission: a vibrant downtown park that is both a natural green heart of ecological value & a platform encouraging social activities.
