Master Degree in Architecture

Polytechnic University of Bari

The case study in question refers to the archipelago of the Cheradi Islands in Taranto in Southern Italy. Our aim is to enhance the strong naturalness that characterizes the islands that have been abandoned since long time ago. The guidelines of our strategy are mainly to reconnect the Islands to the City of Taranto by creating a pedestrian cycle (blue road) that followed the trend of the existing breakwater barrier and to emphasize the natural aspects and architectural elements of quality trying to shield by the large industrial area near Punta Rondinella. In fact, the fundamental aspect of our project is the contrast between the landscape and the strongly anthropized areas. Nature is used not only as an element of valorization of places, but also as a possibility to divide and cover, at least visually, the industrial pole adjacent to our project area. The park of Punta Rondinella has just this purpose, where punctual elements of the Second World War are reused as mirador and info point, as well as starting point of the project. After the walkway we arrive on the island of San Pietro, today partially militarized, which in addition to the strong naturalness is characterized by an area dedicated to bathing that provides a series of services connected to the beach. Finally, the island of San Paolo closes this ideal route, where we will identify marine bio laboratories and will valorize the armored tower Umberto I, the only example of armored tower in Italy.
