Re-naturing, Healing the Cities: Riparian City

Re-naturing, Healing the Cities: Riparian City

Joint Project Studio

Ege University and İzmir Institute of Technology

The project study was prepared in İzmir province at micro basin scale where the soil, flora, fauna and topography interacted with the water from the whole basin where it is located within the Bornova and Laka streams. In the study, nature was examined not only in one layer, but also in four layers according to their colors and tones: These layers are "Zero Nature, First Nature, Second Nature and Third Nature". Each layers were analyzed on a transect analysis by taking longitudinal and width sections along the Bornova Stream. As a result of the analysis, various problems and potentials related to the field have been determined. When both these problems and the water series created in the micro basin are addressed, the title of the study is designated as "Riparian City". There are three basic elements that make up Riparian City. "Edges", which expresses the characteristics of the problems and potentials of the province, "Trail System" as the route to experience the balance between them, and "Riparian Corridor", which constitutes the main vertebra. The main strategic decisions of the study are as follows; to protect the historical traces (historical axes, historic textures: structure and street textures), to protect existing green texture, and to bring back some traces of lost streams to the city and to the nature, protecting the river system in general, producing solutions by turning food areas in the city into advantages for the city, renewing the slum areas.
