The vision for the project was to strengthen the happiness of moving. The schoolyard should not be a passive frame around the school, but instead an active part of life in school. By sewing together the forest with the schoolyard the hope was to also bring more liveliness into the forest. The new design offers activities such as ball courts, a tree-top hut, social swings, a spider web, a skateboarding hub and much more, are connected by a 450-metre wood bridge that loops its way from the school entrance into the surrounding forest. By leading the pupils to the many different activities and providing informal places to hang out and be together, the project’s 450-metre loop has proved remarkably successful in getting even the most difficult groups, including socially challenged children, to move outside and engage in activities in one way or another
The new design has been very successful in fulfilling its mission and has not only attracted pupils to move about but also children, youngsters, families and skateboarders from all over the local region who can use the schoolyard after school hours and in the weekends.
The design proposal has been based on research and dialogue with students, staff of the school and local groups to be able to create a design that fulfills the needs of the various user groups.
The discussion have also been important in understanding the qualities and possibilities of Skørpinge as a local region and how to secure an anchoring of the project in a local context.
In the project, VEGA has worked with especially 3 different aspects.
- The edge of the forest should invite rather than block people from entering. Some vegetation has been take away to open up and as a result making the forest edge longer and more dynamic.
- The loop of 450 meter is an element that re-occurs throughout the site. The loop is a way through the outdoor area and an element that creates different spaces. The route takes pupils out into the forest and back again.
- The relations between different play stations such as ball courts, swings, skating and café tables.
