A Sustainable Waterfront Park for the Resort District of Tongzhou in Beijing
The Sustainable Waterfront Park for the Resort District of Tongzhou is a key project within the Tongzhou Cultural Tourism Zone in Beijing. It encompasses a resort hotel, commercial development district, waterpark, and a 2.8 km long landscape and waterway integrated with the new Universal Studios theme park. The waterfront project includes an open space centered on the canal water, a subway station near the park’s entrance, and surface parking for the theme park. Stormwater features and native gardens connect the spaces, minimizing risks, enhancing water quality, and reminding visitors of their environmental responsibilities. As an important municipal landscape project, the water system significantly improves the local environment, caters to the resort’s operational needs, and drives economic development.
The landscape water system utilizes reclaimed water from an urban treatment plant. Stormwater systems sustain the waterside walkway and landscape strip, extending into the theme park and serving as a recreational water body and retention pond with a stable water level year-round. The waterfront park also fulfils operational needs of the resort, collecting, purifying, and storing stormwater. Furthermore, it provides a recreational public space that urban development in Tongzhou.
The design integrates the local heritage and biodiversity into the landscape and water system into the international tourism theme park as well. Over 3,000 plants and 108 species were introduced to foster biodiversity and native habitats. Additionally, traditional canal elements, Chinese calligraphy rocks, and paving stones showcase the canal's history and enrich the cultural experience of visitors.
This project demonstrates multidisciplinary collaboration and a unique design that considers the interaction of nature, culture, and people. The green infrastructure of waterfront park will benefit the resort, community, and city, for generations to come.
