Bocholt KuBAai

The redevelopment of the 35-hectare Kulturquartier in Bocholt, aims to transform the old textile town, known for the world-famous blue-and-red chequered tea towels, into a vibrant and multifunctional city district. The project, led by Bureau B+B and SeARCH, focuses on revitalizing the industrial landscape along the River Aa, reconnecting it with the city center and the Aa lake.

In the plan, the river regains its central position in the city. Paths, decks, and bridges have been constructed to enhance the experience of the water, while widening the river in certain sections prevents flooding. Nature-friendly riverbanks with water plants and reed help purify the water, creating a contrast between industry and ecology.

Preservation of the industrial heritage is a key aspect of the project. The existing raw and industrial atmosphere, including the scale of buildings, architecture, and spontaneous vegetation, will be retained and made accessible. The narrow streets, walls, wild vegetation, paving surfaces, and large gates will remain defining elements of the area. New bridges, such as the 'podium bridge,' connect the two river banks, providing accessibility and linking the Textile Museum with other paths and tracks.

The transformation of the Kulturquartier occurs in three phases. Phase 1 focuses on opening up the area, creating pedestrian and cyclist-friendly pathways along the river. Phase 2 involves activating the area by utilizing empty factories for temporary events and creating attractive spaces like the terrace in the Textile Museum. Phase 3 includes programming, where old factory buildings are converted into housing and additional cultural and educational facilities are introduced.

The project by Bureau B+B and SeARCH highlights the area's rich history and hidden qualities as a foundation for future development. Through small interventions and gradual transformations, the plan adds new layers to the existing area, ensuring a sustainable and dynamic revitalization process.
