North Root. A green Infrastructure around the Barranquillo stream

Green infrastructure in the fluvial axes of Granada

University of Granada / E.T.S. de Arquitectura

The proposal responds to the two territorial conditions of the place, on the one hand it is the North Gate of the city of Granada and on the other hand it is a meeting place between the agricultural plain and the urban fabric of the periphery. The redefinition of the agricultural heritage marked by traditional farmhouses, chimneys of the traditional agricultural industry of the area, pre-existing parcel structures and characteristic vegetation of the Vega de Granada landscape and cultural identity is formulated. It seeks to transform the urban edge with connotations of marginality, into a metropolitan social meeting point located in the fluvial axis of the Barranquillo stream. For this, a double scale of intervention is generated, a strategy for the renaturation of the stream, promoting ecological connectivity with the rest of the territorial network, and an urban and landscape project that generates a concentration point for mixed, urban-rural activities. The area currently has a highly intense commercial area, which leads to a very high volume of traffic being concentrated at peak times. The project incorporates the commercial area but inverting the car-pedestrian relationship, increasing the pedestrian space and generating tree-lined walks and green sequences. The sequence of green spaces connected to the axis of the stream and the incorporation of an agricultural park in the residual spaces configures a green infrastructure on the northern edge of the city of Granada.
