Pandas' destiny still awaits: Establishing Panda corridors and coupling the human-nature system

The giant panda, a cherished emblem of Chinese culture, stands at a critical juncture. Despite notable strides in conservation, the looming specters of habitat loss and fragmentation persist as grave threats to this vulnerable species. In response, the creation of a panda corridor emerges as a pivotal initiative, aiming to bridge fragmented habitats and facilitate vital gene exchange among panda populations.

Located in China's Xiaoxiangling mountain range, our project addresses the dwindling giant panda population in one of the most sparsely populated regions. The Panda Reserve, facing a concerning decline, is the only sanctuary in this area. Through meticulous research, we focus on three proposed corridors, exploring their potential for planning and implementation. Analyzing the corridor's habitat status, we developed restoration strategies. However, challenges such as roads, agriculture, grazing, herbal plant picking, and human disturbances hinder corridor establishment. Our goal is to create a coexistence system where local communities, pandas, and wildlife thrive. Instead of displacing residents, we aim to transform local farming practices while ensuring sustainable livelihoods. Recognizing the panda as an umbrella species, restoring their habitat protects companion species.
