Periurban Park, Quinta da Penha

University of Algarve / Faculty of Sciences and Technology

Quinta da Penha consists of an area with a rural character and mostly expectant, in an area surrounding the city of Faro. In this are agricultural areas that are divided into small plots, small greenhouses abandoned and, in the place that corresponds to the water line, it is only possible to observe a large patch of weed vegetation (Arundo donax). On the other hand, despite the poor state of conservation, it is still possible to observe some structures that were part of the main irrigation system (wells). The intervention proposal aims to restore, rehabilitate and recover the identity of the place, articulating the Urban with the Nature. In the proposed program for the study area, there are several functions in addition to aesthetics such as protection, production, recreation and cultural. The protection function is attributed through the vegetation that is present in the areas corresponding to the woods and the riparian gallery. Production is a function proposed for areas destined to social gardens, agricultural fields and irrigated orchards. The recreational function is distributed throughout the space, namely: in the retention basins, in the woods, the viewpoints, children's playground. Bioetars ensure the purification and enhancement of the water resource and offer its permanent presence on the spot. Finally, the cultural function is present both in the cultural center (events and activities that promote themes such as ecology) as well as in the requalified heritage elements. Thus, it is intended to recover the identity of the place.
