Sarajevo - The City as a Campus, Universities as Impulses for Sustainable Urban Development

Master's Thesis

Weihenstephan.Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences

The Master's Thesis 'Sarajevo – The City as a Campus' deals with the University of Sarajevo and its integration into the Bosnian capital city. The work represents the method of 'Research by Design'.

The main campus of the institution of higher education is a relict of a former military site founded by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1897. It is located in the city centre of Sarajevo in the district of Marijin Dvor.
The university campus is still characterised by demolished buildings caused by the Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995. These areas on the campus are, therefore, not in use by the university.

A soon redesign or reorganisation of the campus is improbable, as well. Nevertheless, more space on the campus is needed for single faculties, which are currently dispersed around the whole city of Sarajevo. Moreover, there is a lack of obvious connections or rather a network between the faculties and the university.

On top of that, there is hardly any synergetic relation between the city of Sarajevo and the University. On that account, it is the aim of the Master's Thesis to propose solutions for this situation, in order to develop common places for a successful learning environment inside the city. Furthermore, the future role of the University in Sarajevo and the influence of the city on this centre of education, are taken into account. The development of the concept was achieved by a deeper research and analysis of the context, to serve as a base for the following planning and design steps.
