Born in 1956. Studied landscape architecture at the RHSTL College in Boskoop and the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. She worked at Buro Maas and for the Province of North Holland, before spending ten years at the Bakker and Bleeker (B+B) office. She then set up the Sylvia Karres office in 1994 and started Karres and Brands landscape architects together with Bart Brands in 1997. Sylvia is specialised in the integration of urban development, landscape architecture and architecture. She has worked on a variety of largescale design commissions, the redesign of the public space in the city centres of Breda and Bergen op Zoom (Netherlands) and the master plan for Filipstad in Oslo. She is fascinated by change processes in the landscape, as can be seen in her designs for the Nieuwe Ooster cemetery, the structural plan for ’s-Graveland. Sylvia is a guest lecturer at institutions including the Amsterdam and Rotterdam Academies of Architecture and Wageningen Uni - versity. She has also been a jury member for design competitions including Europan 8, Archiprix 2007 and Lausanne Jardins 2009.
