Nervi d'acciaio e calcestruzzo, a new landscape for the military seaplane base of Marsala

The Marsala coast layout presents as an articulated system of remarkable historical, landscape and tourist interest: the Stagnone Islands, the salt marshes, the Salinella park, the Archaeological Park of Lilibeo, the harbour, they all define the distinctive features of a unique waterfront. In the heart of this articulated system, the area of the former seaplane base divides the south coast from the north coast.
A place with strong historical features, housing important architectural artifacts from the Second World War like the Hangar Nervi, is unsolved and abandoned, and becomes the object of this proposal, aiming to offer a landscape that allows the fruition of this portion of coast, missing piece of a well-defined system.
The layout of the project is based on the opposition of sinuous and straight lines, generating paths that allow to cross the area both transversely, reaching to the sea, and longitudinally. From this pattern, it is then possible to distinguish three different areas, each one of them with a specific role: services, meeting spaces and green areas.
