THE MONT VENTOUX LEGEND - Philippe Deliau, ALEP Paysagiste

25th May 2023

For years, Mont Ventoux's 700,000 annual visitors have overwhelmed the summit, with anarchic parking generating pedestrian flows that impact the natural environment and disrupt safety and the pleasure of contemplation. Visitors vacillate between wandering and erratism, and overcrowding threatens... To better appreciate this natural monument, which lives up to its international reputation, the new Promenade is campaigning for the summit and its ridges to be left alone, rather than developed, thus restoring its sacred character. The aim is to design a project that will extend the legend! This approach is built on sharing: it's a good idea to walk a little further to get a better feel for the visit, and to park a little further away from the summit to make it more wonderful.

Managing the influx of visitors is a top priority, with four off-centre parking areas providing easy access to the observatory forecourt via comfortable paths or the grand staircase known as "Les Degrés du Ventoux". The design of the visitor route is tailored to the diversity of visitors and offers easy access for everyone. The treatment of the forecourt, with its pathway and a looped walk around the summit, guarantees views of the wider landscape, while the other areas and wild paths, no longer needed, have been healed.

The ecological and landscaping restoration is based on a deliberate and radical separation of traffic flows, the introduction of short and/or very comfortable paths, the development of a mimetic vocabulary, the favouring of hollows, joints and "voids" so that endemic flora can grow right up to the summit. It creates a calm, protected space around each viewpoint, anticipates site management needs and makes it easy to hold events thanks to the modularity of the summit platform.
