Harmony Unifying Diversity for Küçükköy-Sarımsaklı
Graduation Project
Istanbul Technical University
This project, titled Harmony Unifying Diversity, focuses on fostering coexistence among diverse ecosystems in the Ayvalık..
Küçükköy-Sarımsaklı region through an integrated landscape design approach. The primary objective is to enhance ecological resilience by preserving biodiversity and promoting spatial harmony among natural systems.
During the site analysis, critical risks such as sea-level rise and flood susceptibility were identified, particularly around the lagoon, amusement park, and coastal zones in Sarımsaklı. These areas, currently under residential use, were found to be unsuitable for settlement due to soil instability and exposure to natural hazards. To mitigate these risks, building densities were reduced in vulnerable zones and replaced with ecologically responsive landscape strategies designed to manage floods and enhance resilience. A central principle of the design was the spatial integration of different ecosystems to ensure mutual support. In line with this, a pedestrian and bicycle corridor was
proposed to connect Küçükköy and Sarımsaklı, promoting both ecological continuity and social interaction. In Küçükköy, the design incorporates spaces for cultural, artistic, and ecological activities, particularly around the village core, and reinforces ongoing educational and cooperative programs through multifunctional open spaces. The e projec project was developed across multiple scales (1/2000, 1/500, and 1/200), a bridge ecological integrity and community needs. 1/500, and 1/200), aiming to reflect the harmony of diversity through layered, site-specific interventions that
