Careggi Campus Landscape Project

Careggi Campus Landscape Project

Landscape Architecture 2 / Master Degree In Landscape Architecture

University of Florence

'Careggi Campus' is an ongoing process of research by design based on a partnership between the Landscape Design Lab and the Master Degree in Landscape Architecture of the University of Florence and with the general management of the University Hospital of Careggi. The regeneration of the open spaces network of the hospital is the main topic of the initiative and the conversion in an urban open campus is the study hypothesis. An improper framework of mobility and accessibility inside and around the area is the main issue to face with a systemic vision based on different scales, looking at the ongoing and planned evolution of both the regional and national and  the metropolitan and urban networks of mobility, as also interpreting changes and opportunities of improvement of mobility and accessibility in the urban district and inside the university hospital area. This latter has been built up since the early twentieth century without any systemic vision and rules able to guide step by step the project and works of transformation of buildings and open spaces. 'Careggi Campus' explores properties and capacities of the nowadays open spaces starting from few basic qualities and quantities: shape and spatial continuity, surface and environmental activity, dimension and liveability. All these topics are faced together by designing about sustainability and looking for hydrological resilience, microclimate conditioning, spatial identity as relevant components of an appreciable resultant of psycho-physical well-being.
