Habitable Groynes

At the intersection between a dense urban environment and the sea, Madeira Terrace and the adjacent seafront, are an integral part of the history of Brighton's seafront. The project was to understand and tackle the issues upon the coastline, specifically in the Madeira terrace domain. The terrace has been neglected for many years, and now it is being decided to get renovated. However, issues like neglected terrace space usage, polluted surface water accumulation during rainfalls, beach shingle draft, lack of coastal and urban vegetation and the sea flooding were the dominate objectives to be considered.
The concept was to re-imagine the flood defence wall between the beach and the Madeira Terrace, link them with materiality, functionality, spacial dialogue and the idea of an edge as space. Habitable Groynes creates a threshold as a whole, introducing biodiversity, shingle and flood management and a new layer of experience for the public.
