KONTUR ++ Biodiverse contour to strengthen urban resilience

Urban Gaia. Landesresilienzschau Offenburg 2050

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Offenburg has historically expanded its area without effective or innovative approaches. Kontur++ aims to capture the city's current expansion by creating a biodiverse contour. This ensures future resilience, benefiting cultural landscapes, flora, fauna, and inhabitants. Preserving biodiversity is crucial for regional ecological stability.
The contour also incorporates nature into the city and motivates residents to participate. It connects the city and countryside, encompassing the entire urban area. The project acts as an outlet, limiting urban sprawl while establishing a connection to nature. Kontur++ shapes the urban fringe as an interesting zone for city dwellers. Densification opportunities exist through additional stories or housing concepts that integrate the contour. Monocultures like cropland and vineyards offer chances for a biodiverse zone. Mixed crops and permacultures support biodiversity, providing long-term benefits. The ultimate goal is to achieve energy and food self-sufficiency and maximize land utilization by strengthening the contour. Enhancing biodiversity through Kontur++ boosts the city's resilience to climate extremes and natural disasters. By creating green spaces and promoting biodiversity, Offenburg adapts to climate change and recovers from extreme weather events.
