A Landscape Strategy for Burlamacca Canal in Viareggio

Regional Open Spaces System Planning Laboratory / Master Degree Course in Landscape Architecture

University of Florence

The aim of Regional open spaces system planning Laboratory is to provide an overview of the design process for open spaces system in urban and peri-urban context without losing the specificity of each single places. The learning process is based on an interdisciplinary approach combining theories and knowledge of two teaching: Open spaces implementation and management and Landscape project evaluation.

Thus, the applicative part of the laboratory provides exercises in which to experiment with the different tools acquired by trying to highlight the transcalarity of the landscape and the multiple dimensions of the design path.In the 2018/19 edition the application has been focused on the open spaces system related to the Burlamacca canal in Viareggio. The intent was to create a diversified system of open spaces capable of responding to different needs. Therefore, create landscape connections between the Ligurian Sea, Lake Massacciuccoli and the Apuan Alps, as well as between the city and the reclaimed agricultural plain, between sites of naturalistic importance and the tourist and seaside city. No less important was to reactivate a temporal relationship between the historical component of places and the contemporary economic and social dimension.

All this using a compositional language, forms and materials consistent with the identity of the places in an environmental, cultural and social sustainability approach.
