Le Vallette, Torino. New opportunities for public space

Le Vallette, Torino. New opportunities for public space

DESIGN STUDIO Urban Green Areas Design and Management

Politecnico di Torino

Le Vallette district is located in the northwestern suburbs of Turin and was built as a residential area for migrant workers in the 1960s. The district is relatively far from the city center and the consequent passage of very few people makes it a forgotten place in the city and deprives it of its vitality. Therefore, the aim is to rebuild the image of the district and restore its dynamism, starting from the transformation of its center. The design was inspired by the distinctive architectural forms of the district. These geometric lines not only made the whole project full of rhythm and dynamism, but also allowed the citizens to perceive the district characteristics inside the designed structure. The project consists of a main pedestrian thoroughfare that crosses three different areas: green area (lawn, green band and botanical garden), cultural exchange area (central square and shopping center) and activity area (playgrounds, fitness area and indoor multi-purpose activity center). We integrated and rebuilt existing green space resources, setting up several functional areas according to the different needs of residents and opening the large lawn to provide citizens with a good place for weekend outing. The main square is suitable to hold local fair, exhibitions, small concerts and the multifunctional parking lot provides the venue for the morning market. Various forms of playgrounds and staging areas are located in the activity area, allowing residents of different age groups to find their own spaces.
