QUARRIES PARK OF BORMIDA RIVER

QUARRIES PARK OF BORMIDA RIVER

Landscape and Regional Planning

Politecnico di Torino / School of Planning and Design

The case study involves the Municipalities of Sezzadio, Castelnuovo Bormida and Cassine, located in the province of Alessandria, in Piedmont. After a careful analysis and interpretation of the values of the landscape and the instruments of the Plan, we have defined a strategic framework composed of 6 objectives, mainly focused on the promotion of the quality of the landscape and on the strengthening and improvement of access to the territory. The project focus was on the Bormida River, whose banks are extremely compromised by the presence of extractive areas. Hence the decision to create the "Parco delle Cave del Bormida", where the recovery of abandoned quarries is an important opportunity from an environmental, landscape and social point of view.

The modalities of intervention focused more on the environmental recovery aimed at the reintegration of these areas in a naturalistic context and the reconstitution of ecological characters. These elements of disfigurement of the landscape have been reintegrated into a landscape system of great value aesthetic-perceptively, ecologically and culturally. Another important element is the conservation of the agricultural vocation and the integration of farming areas within the park. This operation aims to highlight itself as a sewing element with the surrounding productive landscape and in terms of enhancing the socio-economic and historical-cultural fabric of the local communities. The result is a park of supra-municipal interest, conceived within a broader ecological network, conceived as an opportunity to rediscover the identity of places and spaces for people to enjoy.
