RIBERA (THE FORGOTTEN RIVER)

RIBERA (THE FORGOTTEN RIVER)

MASTER OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE JUANA DE VEGA

UNIVERSITY OF CORUNNA - UNIVERSITY OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

The Barbaña and its urban riberbanks had been buillied over the years. Being an affluent of Miño River, the Barbaña could not compete when they merge in the city of Ourense, and its size was not enough to avoid mistreal and forget. The city grew looking at the other side, making walls, isolating and reducing his amazing natural river bank in the 40s to a ridiculous size.

Barbaña's landscape masterplan divides to rule: a sector dedicated to formation in permaculture and urban farming, agriculture and foodurbanism; a second much more natural area, to finally approach to touch the river, the wetlands; a third zone dedicated to thermalism (Ourense has several fountains and water sources, it happens to be an important one in this area) the thermal fores; and finally a forth area of phytoremediation, to clean all the water since it enter in the riverside park the phytoremediation benches.

Barbaña's landscape project stablishes a strategic point of interest net with the agricultural and thermal traces to restore the riverbanks and give all the mistreated spaces back to their lawful owner. It tries to point out the value of the terrain vagues, changing them into opportunities to approach the forgotten urban river of Ourense.
