Plateaux of the bridge, theater observatory

Plateaux of the bridge, theater observatory

Taller Integrado Ciudad y Espacio Público

Universidad de Valparaíso

Located in the town of Pichidangui, at the mouth of the Quilimarí river, the project is conceived as an open theater, an installation in the landscape that highlights the natural virtues and the existing urban and historical elements, creating an instance of contemplation that poses on the river and faces the sea.

Its form is born, in first instance, from a reflection on the essential character of the theater, which we understand as: the place to contemplate the play. Idea that in our project extends as: place of contemplation of the play in the landscape. Secondly, an exercise in observing the place, ends up shaping the image of the theater, which is why it is presented as a raised platform in the manner of a plateau, collecting the natural morphology of the river mouth, which is presented encased by high plateaus and that endow the project with its scale and height of contemplation.

The disused railway bridge provides a coordinate to approach from the town, which, extending parallel to the beach, measures a portion of the landscape between the river and the sea. This bridge is strategically used as the access to the theater, in this way the construction rises as a frame that embraces the existing structure, and at the same time it sits lightly on the wetland.

The project is developed structurally as a grid pattern, which supports a main platform and a surrounding route that connects the different levels of the building from the bridge. The frame is made up of pieces of wood that, in its configuration, distribute the loads and efforts to perch only at four basal points.

Programmatically, an open and flexible use is proposed, true to its nature of an installation in the landscape, so that the project houses artistic and social activities, as well as an observatory instance, giving rise to a safe approach to the wetland. Reconciling the urban landscape and the natural landscape.
