Urban Design with Design Studio
University of Trento
Our area of study is via Verdi, in the historical center of Trento (Italy). It is a road that starts from the
Cathedral and, through most of the university poles winds up to the east bank of the river Adige.
We felt the need to design a public space, a place that possesses green infrastructures, which is both smart
and available by all people and that becomes a point of reference and meeting in thecity.
To reconnect the historic center with the river we started from an authentic prairie of Trentino, searching
which were the plant species that grow in this region: we focus on the species more in danger of extinction;
Silene, Dracocephalus and also with the fruit trees like Apple tree and kaki three.
In this soft scape we set surfaces on which people can sit, lie down, sunbathe, relax and on which you can
also eat, read, work on. We set smart systems in the arch system that forms the underpass. This regulates
lighting when people pass by, thanks to a system located at the base of the column, that controls the flow
of people. It provides hotspots and allows creepers to grow up and create a gazebo, full of colors, scents
and emotions.
As for the intervention on the Adige, it was thought first to make the area pedestrian, burying the road in a
tunnel and extending the green infrastructure with a panoramic terrace floating over the water.
