Mine Memory
Landscapa Design IV
Istanbul Technical University
This project proposes a landscape design that makes the eco-cultural memory of Marmara Island visible, sustainable, and experiential. Centered in Saraylar, where centuries of marble quarrying have shaped the environment and identity, the design seeks harmony between nature and culture. Under the theme Mine Memory, it aims to protect eco-cultural heritage, ensure sustainable island mobility, and preserve ecological identity. GIS analyses of land cover, vegetation, topography, and erosion inform zoning and circulation. Walking and cycling paths, and a shuttle route, connect key ecological and cultural areas.
In Saraylar, inactive marble quarries are restored with vegetation and recreational uses. A marble experience route begins at the ferry terminal and continues along the coast, integrating commercial and cultural stops like an open-air museum and necropolis. Features such as wetlands, steel structures, and a meditative meadow offer layered, immersive experiences. The project blends natural and human-made landscapes, reconnecting the island’s past and present through adaptive reuse and observation terraces.
