CAMPULA: Sustainable Development and Design of the Coastal University Campus in Pula, Istria, Croatia

Main Project II (the CAMPULA project was one of two possible tasks students could choose between)

Weihenstephan.Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences

The aim of the project 'CAMPULA' was the sustainable development and climate resilient design of the campus of the Juraj Dobrila University in Pula, Croatia, founded at the beginning of the 21st century.
Main aspects were the design of the open spaces, their integration into the urban pattern of the city of Pula and their connection to the coast. The activation of the potentials of 'green and blue infrastructure' should contribute to a sustainable model of the 'Adriatic University Pula'.

The project started with a kick-off workshop on-site together with the local students.
Based on a thorough analysis of the user groups in the urban spaces, the authors of the project 'Interface' interpret the campus as a central -spatial and social- interface between the historical and modern Pula.

Furthermore, the students' design strategies include:

  • Reactivation of the tramline to connect the shoreline and the city centre
  • Enrichment of the individual identities of the harbour by connecting them with the public realm
  • Creation of a new cultural district as an area where Pula’s unique activities such as film exhibition, book fair, wine festivals etc. can take place; these new activities would also create economic opportunities for the local people.
  • Improvement of the biodiversity, the local climate and the recreational potential of the city by creating a connection between the biggest green areas and a bike line from the campus to the forest.
