WATERSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT_ ESGUEVA CHANNEL RIVER IN VALLADOLID (SPAIN) _ PROPOSAL 1

WATERSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT_ ESGUEVA CHANNEL RIVER IN VALLADOLID (SPAIN) _ PROPOSAL 1

ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION V: CONTEMPORARY GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE

University of Valladolid

The group of designers faced a clear problem with the Esgueva river in the city of Valladolid, a channelled river system that was once of great importance, but in order not to interrupt the connections of the city center it was redirected to the periphery, where the working class families lived. The actions that have been carried out have been very specific and purely functional, without attending to the canal as a whole or understanding the needs it required at each point along its route. In view of these problems, the group´s clearest objective is to restore the value of this canal in relation to the city, highlighting its connections with the most emblematic areas of the city and making it the Valladolid´s spine. The connections have been studied rigorously and independently, dividing each of them according to their importance and opportunities. This is materialised in connections of various degrees that affect both the intervention and the repercussion it has within the project as a whole. The proposal works as a living organism, in such a way that the connections form a skeleton (with the canal as a backbone) and the spaces that are created between these connections are those that are linked to the river and create the body of the organism. Within this organism there are point of action such as the green space at the mouth of the river, the old flour mills and the space of the University Campus, where there will be interventions aimed directly at reinforcing the objective of returning the canal to its place on the map of Valladolid.
